Racquetball was cool and sweaty.
The adhesive seems to be holding.
Now I'm learning SQL. Madness, I tell you.
While checking the transmission fluid yesterday as Hook suggested, I noticed that a piece of chrome windshield trim had disappeared leaving the adjoining pieces loose.
My first thought was of the coincidence of this and the mysterious noise. When I woke up today, my brain finally realized that the chrome trim might be the cause of the noise.
I taped the loose trim and the noise was gone! I applied adhesive and tape to hold the trim while the adhesive hardens. The adhesive is non-toxic.
Movable Type 2.65 fixes a security issue. I upgraded to that today and enjoyed the exciting NFL action.
I went riding on local streets for about 35 minutes, plenty of time for my toes to get cold as the wind was brisk off of Long Island Sound.
For Christmas I started playing The Legend of Dragoon. So far it's easy.
Also for Christmas, I have a loud vibration under my hood when I drive over 25 mph. It doesn't happen when I rev it while in park. I hypothesize that it's caused by something connected to the engine rather than the engine itself.
Happy Boxing Day!
Braveheart has a lot in common with A Bug's Life, except Braveheart is somewhat bloodier and a lot more messianic.
Oh yeah, this winter's selection is a nice Aquafresh Flex Tip.
Jury duty is postponed to June 17.
Racquetball was cool and sweaty. I gave Erhan a ball mark on his leg that he'll likely have until next week.
Decaffeinated does not mean caffeine-free.
It was an errand day: library, airport, drugstore, pet store, grocery store, shipping store, barber.
I watched A Bridge Too Far. It's hard to follow, certainly not the best of 1977.
I'm reading The Truth about Chronic Pain by Arthur Rosenfeld. The author interviews people who have chronic pain and people who are experts in the area. It makes the point that the US health system should be more oriented towards relieving pain and discusses why this is not the case.
One example: people are not treated effectively for pain because they have the notion that it is more noble to suffer.
This subject is maddening and inspiring.
It turns out the XML book does suck. I should have read reviews before starting it. Someday I'll learn.
The online XML course I took was more useful although parts of it are out of date.
After months of hoping, I've been summoned to serve as a grand juror for four weeks or longer beginning January 5. I can get one automatic postponemen if I request it. I'm leaning towards postponing. If I go, it's $40/day and 25 miles each way to commute. Proper dress is required: no shorts, no tank tops, no t-shirts, no sweat suits.
After dinner last night I stopped to see the barber lizard.
Web sites advise that iguana cages be at least six feet high, six feet wide and three feet deep so I inquired on a discussion board for opinions on the size of the aquarium. The advice was to call the SPCA.
I called the SPCA. As soon as I said the town the woman knew the iguana. She said they have checked on it and it is OK. I am not convinced. People on the discussion board have low opinions of how this SPCA deals with animals besides dogs and cats.
My racquetball crew met for our annual holiday dinner at John Harvard's. We hardly talked about racquetball. We do our talking on the courts.
I called American Express to cancel my Blue card. "Jamie" asked for a reason. I told him I don't use the card. The last charge on it was almost two years ago. He told me how much AmEx hates to lose a "valued customer" such as myself. His flattery did not get me to reconsider.
Avoid anomalies at the laundry. An example from this weekend: if there's a small puddle of water near but not connected to a washer, avoid that washer. It may be that someone just happened to spill water there. This was not the case.
I refrain from inserting a quiz question here.
It was a machine that did not spin properly. The previous user's laundry had dripped on the floor. I reported the faulty, left a note and partitioned that load among four dryers.
Also, empty lint trays if needed or if you enjoy doing this.
Ocean's Eleven is entertaining even though it's not about an ocean.
Here's a new photo of the barber lizard. It seems cramped.
Careful readers may recall that I enjoy pizza from Mario's. Pop Quiz! Which slice did I eat first tonight? See Comments for answer. Today's Pop Quiz Prize: a dream house!
I'm taking care of my neighbor's dogs for one night. The dogs usually eat between 6 pm and 7 pm. Because of cool and sweaty racquetball I got back just before 9. First they were quite excited to go outside. Then they were quite excited to have dinner. Then one wanted to play and one wanted to chew on rawhide. Dogs know what they want.
Wow. Someone complimented my hair. It's longer than it's been in over nine years and a little crazy.
More flooding in my apartment! Not bad, but still....
Things balance.
The FTC's do-not-call list has been effective. I don't remember the last time a telemarketer called. Pretty soon we'll have a do-not-spam list.
Racquetball was cold and sweaty.
I'm learning XML, the Extensible Markup Language that is, in fact, a metalanguage. Will I ever use it?
The roads are mostly clear.
I watched The Lion King. It does a good job of illustrating the flaws of monarchy and predetermined social hierarchy. Democracy is not explored. Perhaps the filmmakers expect viewers to compare and contrast on their own.
I dug out today. Snow total here was around 18 inches.
I watched Rabbit-Proof Fence. It's good though some of it distorts Australian history.
Here's a four-wheeled ATV on a street near my apartment.
I finished The Princess Bride today. The 25th anniversary edition has the first chapter of the sequel, Buttercup's Baby. You may want to check it out but it will leave you wanting more.
I've added a link to explodingdog where people suggest titles and Sam Brown illustrates some of them. None of my titles are illustrated.
A peeve: radio commercials that have sirens or horns. I just read someone else commenting on this. That means it's a real issue.
Speaking of William Goldman, I watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was released in 1969 and is quite excellent.
Racquetball was cool and sweaty.
I watched Frida. It has very good animations of some of her painting. The story is not as engaging as it should be for such an extraordinary life.
Current book, prompted by jbalsan's comment, is The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman. This is good....the Zoo of Death, backstories of Inigo and Fezzik, and more.
I can't recall another case where I've seen the movie and read the book.
"There are no words to contain all my wisdom. I am so cunning, crafty and clever, so filled with deceit, guile and chicanery, such a knave, so shrewd, cagey as well as calculating, as diabolical as I am vulpine, as tricky as I am untrustworthy ... well, I told you there were not words invented yet to explain how great my brain is, but let me put it this way: the world is several million years old and several billion people have at one time or another trod upon it, but I, Vizzini the Sicilian, am, speaking with pure candor and modesty, the slickest, sleekest, sliest and wiliest fellow who has yet come down the pike."
